Let me just start off by saying that I wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for the students who come to school ready to learn every day and try their hardest to live the Learner Profile and follow the Essential Agreements. I am thankful for the families I have that allow me to teach your children and all the work you do at home with them so that they are successful at school. I am also thankful for these five days to reconnect with my family and friends and hope you spend the time doing the same thing. I can't wait for our Weekend Wrap Up on Monday morning so I can hear all the stories they have to tell about their Thanksgiving or what they did with their time off from school. The joy of working at Campus International is that we allow your children to inquire, wonder and discover and these two short days were filled with just that. If you have not read this book before it is a GREAT read!! We learned so much about a tradition that has been around for many years. I knew it has been around as long as I can remember but I never knew the story behind it or just how long. After reading the book they created their own parade and renamed the experience "Balloons on Payne Ave." We went around to the other 2nd Grade classrooms and paraded our balloon and puppet creations. We thought about many balloons we would like to see in the parade after researching the ones that will be in the parade this year. Did you know you can write your ideas down for new balloons to be in the parade and put them in a box at Macy's?? I had no idea and I really would like a Charlottes Web themed one:)

Students enjoyed acting out our new vocabulary words with a partner. They were so creative and well thought out that we all knew which words they were given to act out. They were such knowledgeable performers! The "YMG" (Young Mens Group) helps us on Tuesdays during our Math Time and it's great to have the extra hands while they try to understand measurement using our centimeter rulers. It's also a great time to build relationships with each other and it not only benefits the 2nd Graders but also the middle school boys as well. I also love when they ask to work with a Math Buddy because they feel they can do the problems without my help. On Wednesday we brainstormed topics we are experts on for Writing Workshop and shared them with a classmate. Special Share Passes went out to Zaire and Brielle for the hard work they did during Writer's Workshop. This is a great time for questions and comments about what the author will include in their writing. I might be biased but take a look at the BEST Class at Campus International!! During an inside brain break students worked together to make me some yummy play dough food! They almost look like the real stuff don't they?? :) On Friday we measured each other using our meter tapes we made. Then they wrote down how many centimeters long they were so that we could plot their data on line plots. Ask them how many centimeters are in a meter? and what we call 10 centimeters?
On Monday at the K-2 Monday Morning Meeting we acknowledged our CARING classmate and all the other IB Learner Profile Award winners! We also learned how to say Thank You in many languages. On Wednesday morning we got to meet the middle school art teacher, Ms. Sammon, and her new pet hen. She told us how and why she now has chickens at her house. She gave us a lot of information and allowed us to ask many questions. When they came back to the room they reflected in their Inquiry Notebooks. They also got to vote on what Ms. Sammon should name the hen because she didn't name them yet. After many different suggestions they voted and settled on the name Maisy. Hopefully our choice will win! After learning about the properties of squares and rectangles in math this week they went around the room to prove they found a square or a rectangle in their Math Notebooks. On Friday we had Case Western nursing students led by Megan come in and teach us about Meditation and Mindfulness. In order to care for others we need to care about ourselves and learn to pay attention to our bodies and what they need to help us become better citizens. On Friday afternoon we participated in the 80s themed Dance-a-thon where many CARING parents work very hard to put this event on, many families and friends donated to support our school and of course the students get to have the most fun by dancing and enjoying the CAVS Scream Team performance.
On Monday we had the K-5 Morning Meeting where we were entertained by the 6th Grade Orchestra that was led by Ms. Lewis, then Mr. Levy and the Choir, and then the 7th and 8th Grade Advanced Orchestra also led by Ms. Lewis. After that great opening to our meeting we also heard the first student in 3rd Grade this year to earn his black belt on the recorder. The Music Department is phenomenal at this school and I can't wait to hear these students perform one day! Ms. Beers also shared some pictures of her receiving an award for our school in Chicago last weekend and PCO announced the winner of the Skittle Estimation Jar. We heard a great quote from Cameran that connected to tragedy going on in Pittsburgh over the weekend and Of course we ended with the Banana Song and Dance led by Mrs. Smith:) In Mandarin we learned about feelings by looking at pictures of animals. Beatrice and Case took ACTION! Beatrice read a quote by Helen Keller and Case shared an action his cousins are doing to help "Lemons of Love" and then asked if we would like to send in coloring books too to help them out. If your child is inspired by these actions they can participate. On Wednesday we came in as our book characters. The costumes and the reports looked AMAZING on BOOK CHARACTER DAY! Even better then that were their presentations!! They were very reflective and knowledgeable as they told about the beginning, the end , and If they met their character topics they researched and read about. FYI Parents... I printed the pictures out as well and when I'm done showing them off I will send them home as a keepsake:) Check out these two book characters from the SAME BOOK! Check out the 2nd Grade Team representing the characters from Goldilocks and The Three Bears :) :) :) and :) We also stopped by Ms. English's Room and shared our Book Character Reports with a partner or two. She had many impressive book characters in her room too! In the afternoon we headed over to Julka Hall at CSU for some treats. The weather actually took a break for us and the walk was very nice. We even did some wondering along our way. We wondered what country the flag was from? What the interesting drinks tasted like at the coffee shop? and How many seconds the walk sign takes to change?? If you find the answers please let us know. When we came back we enjoyed some special treats sent in from Brielle, Tobin and DaMarion and his mom. We ended our week with the Post Show from Playhouse Square about The Ugly Duckling performance. She had us up on our feet performing the entire time.
