We started our week off with so many Action Takers and Communicators! Peer Editing of Fictional Narratives in Action Book Fair Shopping and LOVING the BOGO! On Tuesday they worked in groups and did a Chalk Talk about our NEW Central Idea. This is a Thinking Strategy where everyone gets to share what they think each word means and then the statement as a whole. All voices and ideas are heard and written down. When students finish their work early they come up with great learning ideas like buddy reading with a friend or testing each other on analog clocks. Thank you parents for supporting your children and bringing them to Student Led Conferences on Wednesday. I only got a few pictures, but the Reflection Circle we had the day after was really full of the conversations you had with each other and how they felt it went. Their perspectives always impress me. Connections and Actions with books After learning about the author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, and looking closely at her characters she wrote about and illustrated, students wanted to grab a book and a spot in the room and read! Their excitement and on task behavior would have filled Ms. Potter's bucket for sure! Then they got to pencil sketch and illustrate with color an animal they would like to write a story about. On Friday we had a Guest Reader- Kalilah's Aunt came in to read Green Eggs and Ham. She planned on coming during Dr. Seuss week but that's when we had a snow day so I'm so happy she wanted to reschedule because she really captivated them with her reading voice. We ended our week with a Peter Rabbit play in the morning and then another performance in the afternoon. All students were given an opportunity to choose a part or be a part of the stage crew. They were also encouraged to create props or costumes to go with their character. They did an awesome job reading with expression and making us believe they were that character. I have no doubt their 3rd Grade Performance next year is going to be GREAT!

Our K-2 Morning Meeting once a month allows us to practice being PRINCIPLED by sitting and listening to several speakers and presenters. This meeting celebrated our Dance Team who gave us a pre-show to their Thursday night routine, Ms. Fergy showing us how to dance the Irish Jig by herself and with her kindergarteners, AND the Open-Minded Award winners for the month of February. On Monday we had to be THINKERS during our Preview of the Book Fair by finding books that interested us and were on our reading level, locate the price on the book and record them on a little Wishlist- Don'y FORGET it's a BOGO and they will be shopping on Monday, March 19th at 9:50am. The Book Fair will also be open during Student Led Conferences as well next week. Student Math Leaders practiced being KNOWLEDGEABLE as they counted to 1,000 by 100's using our money math manipulatives. Students were OPEN-MINDED as they ate dumplings and learned about the Chinese culture and their Spring Festival. Mr. Eric from Playhouse Square came on Wednesday to do a post show activity on Gruffalo. Students were COURAGEOUS as they played a game called Trickster and then created their own creature and acted it out. Students were REFLECTIVE as they presented their Landform Islands to a small group to see if they included everything from the rubric. Rose was an INQUIRER by bringing in a resource on Cultural Literacy and finding a section in the book on our last planner on the United States and its landforms. The book was such a cool resource that I was teasing her I was going to keep it! :) Charlierose was a COMMUNICATOR when she brought in her own analogy and shared it during Closing Circle. She read it, asked for responses and then shared what she thought the similarities were. I went to the High Stepper and Cheerleading Competition on Thursday night to watch our CIS girls perform. I thought I'd share a couple pictures. They were AMAZING and won 1st place!
Look who I caught finally eating one of the bird feeders we made on our Snow Day!!!! I couldn't believe we had no school because there was no snow at my house but we did lose our electricity. Not exactly who the feeder was intended for BUT he sure looks happy! On Monday we wore our red, white and black in honor of Dr.Seuss. Theo is so good at comparison bars that he had his only little tutoring group during Math Workshop on Tuesday. On Tuesday we also had some time for our Action Takers. We ended our Tuesday with a skit from Peyton and Kalilah during Closing Circle. On Wednesday we took a walking field trip to CSU's Main Classroom auditorium for the Aristocats musical being performed by 3rd graders! I always love seeing my former students shine on stage but I was so impressed how my students this year were thinking about what roles they might like next year in the musical and how excited they were for that experience to come. On Thursday morning some partners shared their Culture Posters they've been researching. This research and poster will help them for their summative assessment because they will need to look at a picture and write about it's culture. Thursday afternoon we headed to the Playhouse to see The Gruffalo performed in the Ohio Theater. They got to participate in the play by wiggling and yelling and helping the mouse. We ended our week with some student's ideas that were sparked by others who shared this week. AND this is why I take a few minutes a day to let them share because they motivate each other to want to Take Action and make our Classroom a better place, which makes our school a better place and will trickle out into our world one day. With this group of students I have no doubt they will do GREAT things. Friday afternoon we headed out to Tri-C for the Youth Orchestra Performing Arts Arts show. High school students from all over came together to sing and perform for us. Before the show started they walked up to us in our seats and shared their instruments with us and answered questions which was awesome because that's never happened at any concert I've been too and it got them excited about the show and about playing an instrument one day. It even made the students in our room who already play instruments feel proud of themselves.
This week we showed our Love for Reading! This week I invited Special Visitors to our class to read to us. They shared a book with us and what they are currently reading. Students also asked other reading or book questions like: When did you start to read? What type of books do you like? Where do you find books you like? Look who stopped by this week: At the All School Morning meeting we got to hear the Jazz band perform, see a replica painting of Alma Thomas be dedicated to our school, watch a performance from the musical Aristocrats and be in the spotlight for their Black History Month Projects. On Monday they presented their Black History Month Projects. I was VERY impressed with their file folders, costumes, objects that symbolized their person, and their presentations. They really enjoyed learning about these famous people and how they took action to make the world a better place or how their achievements have opened the door for others. We have received many compliments about our hallway display. Our Central Idea is: Geography and culture shape communities. So we spent this week Tuning in to our learning by comparing our culture, geography and communities to those of others around the world. For our Daily Morning Meeting Activity this week we played Headbanz using landforms. They were so good at this game! In Writer's Workshop we have been working on Inquiries into characters and settings for our fictional narratives. Listening to their ideas and conferencing with them is getting me excited to read their final pieces and I'm hoping they will be ready to share at their Student Led Conferences. This week they also got to participate in Kids Love Musicals! They watched The 2003 Peter Pan musical staring Cathy Rigsby on Monday. We did pre visit activities on Tuesday in class and on Wednesday and Thursday they got to sing, act, dress up in costume and dance with an actress from the company. This story fit so well in our current planner because of the theme of places around the world and maps. It also is an example of a fictional story with strong characters, personalities and feelings. They REALLY enjoyed this experience- take a look!
