Soft Start is a time to be curious and explore our inquiries. Every day they are amazing me with what they want to learn about. On Monday we went to the All School Morning Meeting. We listened to the quartet play, a couple 5th grade students talk about their current planner and Sydney let us know about Socktober and what we can do to help out people in Cleveland. On Wednesday we took our learning on the road to The Natural History Museum. We went with the question of what do living things need to survive and what should their environment look like or have for them to survive? (This was also a provocation into our next planner) On Friday we had a nursing student come in and teach a lesson on Emotional Health. Hannah really got their attention with her recording sheet that she drew kitties on using different emotions. They got to talk about their feelings, brainstorm solutions and act out scenarios using those solutions. And how cool is this when three friends show up wearing the same T-shirt!!!
They were so excited that I had to take their picture. I wish we all had one, but T-shirt or not they are all THINKERS!

Our Morning Meeting Activities help us learn to communicate and work together to become better readers. Organizing our Personal Narratives through a 5-Frame Organizer so we can tell others our stories. Sharing their 5-frame Organizers with their classmates and then asking them for questions or comments to make their stories better. Learning about answers to our wonders from friends on the playground during Afternoon Snack Time- Another GREAT Time to build our relationships with each other! My Bucket Filler of the month!! Thank you Beatrice- you just don't know all the ideas I've had since you've dropped this off to me! <3 Reading with each other helps us work on our attributes in our planner Principled and Open-Minded, as well as, our Approaches to Learning with Self-Management and Communication Skills. Students connect with the story My Family by sharing their similarities and differences. We noticed that many of us don't have good attitudes towards math so we helped each other build our math fact fluency by practicing Diving in the Deep with our Math Partners. When I asked them "What they thought would help them learn Glossary Skills?" they said, "Working with a partner!" so that's just what we did! Tobin's Dad stopped by with a healthy treat and a really fun read aloud for his birthday. Tobin picked the best book for his dad to read: The Book With No Pictures By B. J. Novak. We challenge you to read it as good as he did! At our K-2 Morning Meeting we had students perform with Mrs. Pohl, Mrs. Smith lead us in Peel the Banana, Ms. O'Rourke read: The Peace Book, we sang to September Birthday Students and our First Learner Profile Attribute Student was Awarded their Certificate! Congratulations Jenesis! Jing-Li taught us how to make traditional Chinese tea. When we know more about our teachers we build a better relationship with them and want to know more about their culture. We practice being open-minded and principled when she comes in and teaches us about her culture and language. I'm Happy to say that the Action is starting to come in and it started with a picture in the New York Times! Thanks Nathan for starting the ball rolling and I hope it continues throughout the year-I can't wait to see and hear all the ideas they have to make our world a more peaceful place! I told you they would want to see your answers from Open House! Before they even got in the room they wanted to know what parents answered their question? Did they write their name down? Did I remind them to do it? How many parents came? Did they all answer the question? Not only did they listen to each answer carefully but they noticed how similar the responses were and reflected on why the parents chose those attitudes. I love my Friday lunches with my students and our conversations!! A special thanks to the CAS students who taught our 2nd graders some fun recess games. CAS stands for Creativity, Action and Service in the MYP Program. The past month we also had Luana Traben in our room helping me and my students. What a great example to show our 2nd graders of how they can help make their school a more peaceful place. Here are some pics of the 2018 Father's Day Walk from our classroom to the walk outside. Waiting for their fathers, uncles, grandfather's and friends to arrive with their older siblings...
