We Celebrated Earth Day by discussing our own actions and going upstairs to the 4th Floor Science Lab and working in centers with Science Teacher Ms. Orbash and her students. We had the Pre Show Workshop with Playhouse Square for JOURNEY TO OZ and then we walked there on Friday, May 4th to see the performance. This show was really good and used many of our CIS students on the stage to help with the performance. On our walk back we saw what the heavy winds did to a street light that caused a lot of student wonders. The BALLOON RACER Race Day was on April 25th. Students chose another student to race against from 2nd grade. Ms. Sherin marked off where they stopped to see whose went the farthest. Mr. Morris and Isiah kept track of whose went the fastest, and several staff judged the Best Looking. They had so much fun that we decided to keep ours at school and race each other in our classroom and take them outside to see if they would perform better on the blacktop. Zero Waste Lunch Day Students were hard at work creating their Summatives for How the World Works. Students got to choose to work by themselves or with a partner and see if they could create a simple machine to transport garbage to the trash can from their seats using only provided materials. They needed to complete a Lab Report using the Scientific Inquiry Method that they had been working on during Writer's Workshop the past 5 weeks. Our All School Morning Meeting on April 30th showcased some 5th Grade Exhibition Projects, celebrated our Sailing Team, listened to 4th graders reflect on their Columbus Trip, listened to Mrs. Pohl's 3rd graders on recorders, listened to Mr.Levy and Jen Lewis' students perform on instruments and heard about the Girl Scouts action to make journals for the Women's Shelter across the street from our school. After the Morning Meeting we came back to the room and they got to test their Simple Machines one last time (if they wanted to) and finish up their Lab Reports making sure each section had all of the components it needed to be a complete report that followed the Scientific Inquiry Method. This was not about "Did the simple machine work?" but what they learned about forces and motion, simple machines, gravity, technology, innovation and weight and could they explain it. This was also a great theme to talk about having "GRIT." We noticed many students struggle with not always creating things that work and showing persistence to try again and again to improve what they created. We had to spend some time researching inventors and how many times it took them to make successful machines. We tried to celebrate our mistakes and learn from them. I'm hoping some of that sticks with them as they continue their journeys in and out of school. In Mandarin they are learning to say complete sentences in Mandarin. I'm very impressed with how many students can do this. You should ask them to show you. Our last theme is How We Express Ourselves and the Central Idea is: Expression comes in a variety of forms. We have been reading different poets and writing our own poetry. Some students shared their Acrostic Poems and have wanted to read books from their favorite poets to the class. I read the book: The Best Part of Me and then they brainstormed what the best part of them was and wrote a piece on it. They are displayed in the hallway and have received many complements from staff, students and visitors on their great reflections. Last but not least....Here are the Action Takers for the past few weeks Happy Mother's Day!!
It was a pleasure to watch them make your gifts and cards this week. I hope you enjoy them. They were made with the hopes of having you go to the the jar when you needed a bucket filler or a reminder on those hard parenting days:)
