Today we won another class prize for working as a team to follow our 6 Essential Agreements! Our prize was cozy feet for the afternoon where we got to learn in our socks. In the afternoon we went through all of our Reading Exploration Stations for the first time. Students worked in all of these stations: Work on Writing; Word Work; Read to Self, Read to Someone, and Independent Practice. I got to take just a few pics as I was one of those stations too. In Writer's Workshop we have been working on narrative writing and talking about editing. This week they got to help each other using an Editor's Checklist. Many students liked how their partner helped them fix their writing and noticed mistakes they were not aware they were making. On Thursday we met our mandarin teacher Lin Lao Shi. She had us work in table groups to come up with two questions they had about her. Ask your child what some of those questions were and how she answered them. Sometimes we have our snack in the cafe and sometimes we go outside:) On Friday we went out to enjoy our snack while we watched the Blue Angels practice for the Air Show. It can be very hard to teach and learn when these planes fly over our school all day:) I apologize for these pictures as they are so far away and don't give credit to the tricks they were doing and the heart they made in the sky.

Let me just say that the Me Museums that your children did were AMAZING! They took such pride in setting them up. They were so proud of them I had to talk them into walking around and exploring other museums. I truly wish I had the room to display them because they were that good. We all learned cool facts about every single person in our room. They were so good I felt they deserved their own post! After we walked around we got in two circles-one inner and one outer and shared what we learned with each other and then rotated. This morning we started our day with our FIRST All School Morning meeting! We walked in to the song "Totally Eclipse of the Heart!" We started with the Pledge of Allegiance, listened to Jane sing our school pledge, and heard about eclipse activities for the afternoon. This meeting will probably look a little different each week as Ms. Beers figures out the best places for us to sit and traffic patterns. Here's a few pictures I took this morning in case you couldn't make it. So nice to see all of the parents this morning too. Students who brought in permission slips were able to go out and look at the eclipse using glasses or helmets that were brought by the local steel workers who built our school. It was REALLY cool! We started our first theme last week called Who We Are and have been learning about it through provocations. For this provocation we were given scenarios of conflicts in groups of four and had to come up with different resolutions then the team before us. We worked on Making our Reading STICK using the post-it flags with a partner.
Finding our lockers for the first time and our First Morning Meeting. Our First day eating in the Campus Cafe! We played a game called Under the Sea to learn about each other. We shared our 3 Facts About Me sheet by having a snowball fight! We had a lot of fun guessing who each person was and learning about each other. A few students explored the microphone and told us some jokes :) Students worked on picture puzzles together practicing what good students do when they work with others by listening, taking turns, and speaking kindly. We had fun making our puzzles to bring home and share with our families about what we are learning in school this week. We earned two smiley face rewards in our first week! The first one we got to play with playdough and the second one our table teams got to play Jenga:) We had a growth mindset lesson with this book: It taught us a lot about how it's ok to make mistakes! We talked about being mindful and practiced core practice when we fist start our day, after lunch and at the end of our day. We also went over the parts of the brain that benefit from being mindful and taking short breaks throughout our day. We made Math Posters with Numbers About Us. We built Getting to Know You necklaces and walked around and learned about each other. We listened to the story: Only One You and created our own fish that are now hanging in our room. We worked in different teams on a cup challenge where they could not use their hands to stack the cups. From this challenge we learned how important it is to listen to each other, take turns, be creative, accept someone else's ideas and persistence. We also learned that the quietest one in our group sometimes has the best ideas. We ended our first week with just some time to play with each other because some of our best learning happens when we get to choose our own activities and communicate with each other .
