Student Led Conferences are one of my favorite times of the school year. I love seeing them showcase what they know and sharing it with their families. I appreciate all of you that made the time to come and spend the time with them AND I know they do too.

On October 15th at the K-2 Morning Meeting we were entertained by Mrs. Lewis and The Jazz Band. Students walked around playing instruments and it really got us moving and dancing. Case was also awarded the Open-Minded Leader Profile Award. To celebrate our final narrative writing pieces we chose a friend to share them with. We also let them know what we liked about their writing and may have even asked more questions about their small moment stories. In Mandarin she shared pictures of her family with us. To kick off our next type of writing I scattered books around the carpet and we did a Think Walk. Why did I choose these books? What did they have in common? After a lot of brainstorming they came up with all of these books were animals that live in Ohio. We even connected it to our field trip to the Natural History Museum. We then spent some time looking through a non-fiction informational book to see how it differs from fiction stories. Once they were done they chose the Ohio animal they want to research and make an informational book on over the next month. After they wrote their on demand on informational writing I noticed that we needed to understand the difference between a fact and an opinion so I put together some learning experiences to help them see the difference. In these pictures teams got together and tried to figure out the key words in facts and opinions.
On Tuesday we had our Crenshaw party to celebrate the book that taught us a lot about our imaginations and relationships and attitudes amongst family members and friends while also learning about families who struggle. We rated the book and shared our opinions. Their reflections were so detailed and heartwarming to me! A Special THANK YOU to the families who sent in cereal and PURPLE jelly beans, as well as, all the students who dressed up as a character in the story. Even though the book is over we are still talking about Crenshaw and I'm sure we will throughout the year. We were so excited to finally get our class T-shirts! A huge THANK YOU to Ashley Taseff who ordered these shirts for the entire 2nd Grade Team!! Our class T-shirt day is EVERY WEDNESDAY and on FIELD TRIP days so the week of October 22nd we can wear them on Wednesday (Our day of the week to wear it) and Friday (Playhouse Field Trip) On Friday, Abby, a Case Western Student Nurse, and several others in her class came and taught a Hand Hygiene lesson to our class. She used glitter with lotion to show them how germs can travel very easily. She also went over proper hand washing to get germs off of our hands. This lesson really highlighted the importance of washing our hands to keep us healthy and safe. We spent a lot of time this week finishing up our Summative skits, posters and books for
Who We Are. We also reflected on the rubric and what we can do better the next time we do a summative or use a rubric to go over our work. They finished their narratives and graded their writing as an author using the rubric we have been using to guide our writing since August. You will get a chance to see these at their Student Led Conferences. We spent time conferencing together one on one about their goals this year by looking at their Data from Math, Spelling and Fluency Tests. Students work together to have a conversation in Mandarin on Monday. Students worked in teams on The Index Card Challenge. They needed to use only 100 index cards to build the tallest tower they could build in 20 minutes. We discussed the Cup Stacking Challenge and what we noticed about team members then and what we could do to influence relationships with our team members now and what attitudes we needed to bring to our team to make this work. They also reflected and planned their ideas prior to starting and then again at the end. Action Takers... These girls have been researching Blobfish during their Soft Start Time and started to write a book about them to share with the class. After they were done the students wanted to know facts about them so they are going to keep adding to their book. Check out our science experiments we have going on! Now they are learning about food coloring that is in our food and wondering if it kills flowers what does it do to us AND why do other countries ban food coloring but we don't?
