Starting our morning off with a fun greeting that gets us up and moving. We reviewed our Lab Report Anchor Chart before we explored and experimented with our Marshmallow Shooters. In this Lab Report we are focusing on how to make our Procedure writing more detailed using a mentor text. Peer Tutoring in Math Not only are they helping each other they are taking their learning to a higher level by being able to explain it. Some Action Takers for the week Building Catapults with a Partner Time to test their catapults... AND Time to come up with questions about what they could do to get the right force to get the ping pong ball in the basket. They will come back next week and try to improve on their catapults with one last testing session. week of april 16thWe started our week off with the K-2 Morning Meeting. At this meeting we heard from an 8th Grader, Matthew, who shared information on Down's Syndrome as part of his Service Project. Matthew's brother has Down Syndrome and attends CIS so he comes with a lot of personal knowledge on the topic. We also heard from 4th Graders who are doing the Zero Waste Challenge, and the Knowledgeable Student Awards were revealed. Action Takers for the Week An Inquiry into What Makes Things Move We came up with a Question and our Hypothesis and then worked really hard to write the Materials and Procedure page from our Writer's Workshop lessons. Now comes the creating and testing steps We ended our week with Jane and Delaney from 4th grade presenting on the Zero Waste Challenge. What a joy to have these girls present to us since I had both of them in kindergarten. They were leaders then and I'm happy to see that they continue to be Action Takers.

One of my favorite times of the school day is our Morning Meeting where we greet each other, share personal stories, the actions we are taking and making connections to our planner. This week we did the Magnifying Glass Greeting where we said "Good Morning!" to our neighbor and then looked through the magnifying glass and said, "I'm so happy to see you!" It really is a Caring way to Communicate with each other and make everyone feel like a special part of our school family. I read the information about the local fire that our school is trying to help. Several students asked how close to our school it was and if they could pull it up on the computer- so we did just that. Once it was up on the screen many shared their connections to the area. It also sparked many conversations and questions about what these families are having to deal with. Austin from Mrs. Hill's Class had his Balloon Racer on Tuesday at dismissal and I asked if he could bring it back on Wednesday to share with my class. His racer flew across the playground at dismissal and I knew my students would like to see that to inspire their racers. After he demonstrated his racer, my students asked questions about his racer and the materials he used and gave positive comments to Austin about how he built his racer. He even shared what he is trying to work on to make it go straighter. When he left my room was just buzzing about their own balloon racers and the ideas they have- I can't wait for April 25th! On Tuesday I read our new story: My Name is Gabriella to them and on Wednesday they got to read it with a partner. On Wednesday they finally got to share and celebrate their final fictional narratives with a friend. They read with expression and fluency AND enjoyed listening to their partners stories too! On Thursday morning Yamini brought in a book recommendation for her classmates and shared her reasons why. There were a lot of students who knew about Houdini and shared their facts about him so this book inspired a lot of interest. I love it when students not only want to share, but also inspire others. On Thursday afternoon we had the opportunity to go to the 4th floor Science Lab and work with Mrs. Hochman on a lesson about the innovation with seat belts. Students learned about the vocabulary words inertia and momentum and then got to see them in action. They worked with a partner to create a seatbelt for an egg and watched two trials using different inclines to test their innovations. After each one was tested we talked about what made that seatbelt work or not and what they might change if they had time to create another one. Our Closing Circle this week was a Good-Bye Cadence where students got to practice being a Leader or respond with Group responses. Students were also given the opportunity to write their own for us to do next week. On Friday we started the Lucy Caulkins writing lessons for Lab Reports and worked our way through a Lab Report step by step with a Forces and Motion experiment. This Lab Report will now be an exemplar for them to use with all other experiments during this unit. They put it in their Writing Folders and added it to their other tools in there.
